How Do I Report Agriculture Damage?

Kansas is one of the largest agriculture producing states and also has a reputation for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. Undoubtedly Kansas’ producers and ranchers will suffer losses once again this year.

County emergency management agencies are encouraged to report crop and physical losses, such as barns, machine sheds, grain bins, combines, tractors, etc. to the Kansas Division of Emergency Management on the Rapid Assessment Report. The number of farms and acres is not needed.

Every county in Kansas has a County Emergency Board (CED). Some of county emergency managers serve on these local boards. The CED assesses physical and crop damage following an incident such as freeze, drought, tornado, hail, etc. A “Flash Report” is completed and forwarded to the USDA Farm Service Agency located in Manhattan, Kansas within 72 hours of the incident. The State Emergency Board (SEB) then reviews each Flash Report and a recommendation is made to the Governor whether to ask for a USDA declaration. KDEM serves on the SEB. The information received from county emergency management agencies is reported to the SEB.
